Passive Skill Inheritance

Updated 2026-08-19 · 7 min read

Passive skills are permanent buffs (and occasional debuffs) attached to a Pal. Breeding is the only reliable way to hand-pick them — here's how inheritance works and how to build a flawless Pal.

How inheritance works

When two Pals breed, the baby inherits up to 4 passive skills pulled from the combined pool of both parents' passives, with a chance of also rolling one brand-new random passive. There's no guarantee — it's weighted randomness — so the strategy is to load both parents with the passives you want and re-roll across generations.

Two consequences of the pool draw that trip people up: having the same passive on both parents does not raise the odds of the child getting it — every trait in the combined pool is drawn from at random, so a duplicate just wastes a slot. And the fewer total traits in the pool, the better your odds of a clean result. That's why zero-passive Pals are genuinely valuable: breeding your keeper against a blank partner is the fastest way to strip unwanted traits out of a line. Keep a few.

The Pal Surgery Table (1.0)

Palworld 1.0 added a shortcut that changes the endgame of passive hunting: the Pal Surgery Table, unlocked at technology level 38. It lets you add or replace a passive skill directly using Implants, for a gold fee that scales with the implant's tier (roughly 10,000 for common work passives up to 50,000 for rare ones). Implants for stronger passives come from bounty tokens (hunting wanted fugitives) and battle tickets (arena rewards).

The efficient split: breed for the rare passives you can't buy (and for stats), then install the cheap utility ones. Classic surgery picks for base workers: Insomnia (works through the night — give it to every non-Dark base Pal), Work Slave (+30% Work Speed, −Attack; fine for Pals that never fight) and Positive Thinker (slower sanity drain). For mounts, Nimble or Runner.

Best offensive passives to stack

  • Legend — big Attack & Defense boost (legendary Pals only)
  • Musclehead — +30% Attack, −Work Speed
  • Ferocious — +20% Attack
  • Burly Body — +20% Defense
  • Lucky — +15% Attack & Work Speed

Best work / utility passives

  • Serious / Artisan — +Work Speed
  • Swift / Runner / Nimble — +Movement Speed (great for mounts)
  • Positive Thinker — slowly heals SAN

Step-by-step: breed a perfect Pal

  1. Pick 4 target passives (e.g. Legend, Musclehead, Ferocious, Lucky).
  2. Catch or breed Pals that each carry one or two of them.
  3. Breed two carriers; keep the baby with the most target passives.
  4. Pair that baby with another carrier and repeat.
  5. After a few generations, one baby will roll all four. Breed two of those to lock it in.

Because the child species is fixed by the pairing table, you can chase passives and a specific species at the same time — use the calculator to keep the species on track while you stack passives.
